Outline of Iki City

Iki City faces the Sea of Genkai, with Gonoura Port located 76 km northwest of the Port of Hakata in Fukuoka Prefecture, and Indoji Port 42km north of Karatsu-Higashi Port in Saga Prefecture.
The island of Iki extends about 17 km north and south, and about 15 km east and west. With a total area of 138.5 km2, this turtle-shaped island is the 20th largest island in Japan.

Due to the influence of the Tsushima Warm Current, Iki Island has a generally mild ocean climate. Compared to northern Fukuoka Prefecture, at the same latitude, Iki City is cooler in summer and a little warmer in winter. With rare snowfall and snow cover, the climate is pleasant throughout the year.

Historical Heritage

<Harunotsuji Ruins> Ruins of a moated settlement. This is one of the largest of its kind in Japan, and designated as a national special historic site.

Specialties

<Shochu> Iki is said to be the birthplace of barley shochu, with seven shochu factories in the city.

<Iki Beef> Iki beef is one of the top-brand Japanese black cattle beefs. Since Iki cattle's meat has an established reputation for high quality, Iki cattle are also used as breeding cattle for various top-brand beef cattle breeds across Japan, such as Kobe beef cattle and Matsusaka beef cattle.

<Fresh Seafood> A wealth of various other specialty food items is available.

<Iruka Park (Dolphin Park)> Six bottle-nose dolphins are kept at this park.
<Fishing> The city boasts numerous fishing spots, attracting many anglers on weekends. Many anglers enjoy boat fishing from their own pleasure boats. In "Iki Deai-no-Mura (Iki Village of Encounters)," visitors can enjoy sea kayaking tours and other experience-oriented attractions.
